Easily soluble in water, PHPA/Polyacrylamide (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) is a type of co-polymer, which is acknowledged for its thickness increasing properties, optimal viscosity and high flocculability. This polymer is widely used in oil extraction process for its good oil recovery property.

Acrylonitrile is polymerized to form polyacrylonitrile which is then partially hydrolyzed to form acryla-mide and acrylic acid groups along the polymer chain (see Figure 16). These polymers are referred to as PHPA, (partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide), and are used as clay extenders, flocculants, and encapsulating colloids.
