They have been used to condition the water in shrimp nursery tanks, to inhibit the growth of pathogenic agents and to maintain water quality in intensive aquaculture ponds. Studies have shown that administration of probiotics during early developmental stages can be more effective in preventing gastrointestinal associated disorders because the digestive tract and function are not fully developed and the immune system is still incomplete. Table 1: Application of various probiotics in shrimp ...
As aquaculture develops, the industry faces several challenges related to its environmental impact. The application of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) is not only associated with gut health (feed probiotics), but also with bioremediation that improves the environment (water and soil) in which the animals are reared, writes Gonalo Santos, R&D Manger, Aquaculture, Biomin.

Microbial Interactions in Aquaculture. result in an improvement in shrimp production. In particular, luminous Vibrio can be controlled in this manner. To my knowledge, there has not been any rigorous study made of Vibrio populations in shrimp on farms, in relation to antibiotic or probiotic usage.
Pond Toss™ and Shrimp Shield™ are two probiotics that help improve the water quality on fish and shrimp farms by reducing ammonia and nitrites and by digesting organic sludge. Maintaining good water quality is important in aquaculture as the quality of water effects the health and growth of your fish.

A V. alginolyticus strain used as a probiotic in a commercial shrimp hatchery in Ecuador has been applied in a bath treatment to Atlantic salmon (21 g) maintained in freshwater . V. alginolyticus was found in the intestine up to 21 days after the initial probiotic application.
The range of probiotics examined for use in shrimp aquaculture has encompassed Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, and unicellular algae (Table 1; Irianto & Austin, 2002). Table 1 Probiotics applied in aquaculture (after Irianto & Austin, 2002 )

The use of probiotics and use these "selective" microorganisms in hatcheries and large Aquaculture ponds have provided a much needed solution to control disease, increase survival rates, and reduce the use of antibiotics to provide healthier shrimp populations.

5.4. Probiotics and quality of water in aquaculture. Another aspect of the use of probiotics in aquaculture is the improvement of the quality of the water in the farming nurseries. Increases in organic load, levels of phosphorous and nitrogen compounds are growing concerns in aquaculture.

Probiotic Applications in Aquaculture. Bacterial species composition in shrimp ponds, which are large water bodies up to a hectare or more in size, hatchery tanks and shrimp guts can easily be changed and thus result in an improvement in shrimp production. In particular, luminous Vibrio can be controlled in this manner.
Applications of Probiotics in Aquaculture The need for sustainable aquaculture has promoted research into the use of probiotics on aquatic organisms. The initial interest was focused on their use as growth promoters and to improve the health of animals; however, new areas have been found, such as their effect on reproduction or stress tolerance, although this requires a more scientific development.
- What are organic polyelectrolytes?
- Polyelectrolytes are those polymers which are water soluble and carrying ionic charge. Organic polyelectrolytes were introduced into environment engineering because of its potentials. Polyelectrolytes are used successfully in water and wastewater treatment (Lee et al. 1998 ).
- Which polyelectrolyte is used in water treatment?
- Synthetic polyelectrolyte namely non-ionic PAM has also been used in water treatment (Selvapathy and Reddy 1992 ). It consists of 1–3% anionic group as in case of PAM, where they are prepared by hydrolysis of amide groups under controlled conditions.
- Is polyacrylamide a water soluble polyelectrolyte?
- Part of the book series: Springer Proceedings in Physics ( (SPPHY,volume 246)) Polyacrylamide is a water-soluble synthetic polyelectrolyte which consists of repeating units (forming a chain structure and containing hydrophilic groups).
- How is partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide wastewater treated?
- Yongrui, P., et al. Treatment of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide wastewater by combined Fenton oxidation and anaerobic biological processes. Chem. Eng. J. 273, 1–6 (2015).
